Who I am
Hi, I’m Jim Schutt, and I’m so glad you’re here!
I grew up in a small city in West Michigan near Lake Michigan, where I spent my childhood with two older brothers, playing sports and music, enjoying the beach in the summer, and surviving the cold in the winter. From a young age, I’ve been deeply curious about personal growth and the reasons behind people’s behavior, which led me to study psychology and neuroscience at the University of Michigan.
My own journey of self-discovery took me to Colorado, where I found a love for the outdoors, and then to Hawaii, before settling in Bend, Oregon. Along the way, I explored different philosophies and world religions, which eventually deepened my passion for helping others understand themselves and find meaning in their own lives.
As a counselor, I’m able to combine my passion for personal growth with the science of psychology to support others on their own journeys. I’m dedicated to helping you build self-acceptance, find purpose, and access the resources you need to thrive.
Outside of work, you’ll often find me skiing or biking on the mountain, playing music, or relaxing with a good book and our dog by the fire. My wife and I also enjoy art, traveling, and scuba diving when we get the chance.
Please reach out with any more questions and I hope to meet you soon!
Approach
I understand that each person brings their own unique strengths, challenges, and experiences to therapy. I view therapy as a collaborative journey where we work together to identify and build upon your existing resources. My goal is to help you develop new tools, deepen self-awareness, and recognize your inherent strengths. We will create goals together and track your progress in a space where you feel safe to explore new ways of thinking and being.
I am particularly passionate about helping individuals who are struggling with anxiety, self-esteem issues, and the confusion and isolation that often accompany them. I believe that internal conflict often arises when we avoid confronting fears or discomforts, leading to unrealistic expectations and self-criticism. My therapeutic approach is rooted in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps you increase awareness of your emotions and core values. By learning to accept all parts of yourself, we can work together to develop healthier ways of being, allowing you to reconnect with the people and activities that matter most to you.
I also specialize in trauma recovery and recognize the significant impact trauma can have on your sense of self and your view of the world around you. Traumatic experiences often leave us feeling stuck in the past, with distorted beliefs that no longer serve us. Using Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) techniques, I help you challenge these beliefs and reframe your understanding, creating space for healing and personal growth.
Whether you’re seeking help with anxiety, trauma, self-esteem, or any other personal challenge, my aim is to provide you with the support and tools needed to move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and peace.
